The Bar Human Rights Committee (BHRC) has written an open letter to the UN Secretary-General, Ban Ki Moon, to express its concern at the inhumane conditions being suffered by Iranian Refugees at Camp Liberty in Iraq.
The Government of Iraq has repeatedly failed to meet its obligations to respect the humanitarian and human rights of the refugees who have been targeted by numerous deadly missile attacks. The Iraqi authorities are now imposing a cruel medical siege on the camp, denying the refugees access to medical services and putting their lives at stake. It is believed that 23 people have died so far as a result of this medical siege.
Kirsty Brimelow QC, Chair of the Bar Human Rights Committee said, “The treatment of the refugees at Camp Liberty is in complete contravention of international humanitarian law and must be urgently addressed. We request the UN to recognise Camp Liberty as a refugee camp under the supervision of the UN High Commission for Refugees. We believe that this measure would enable the refugees to be rightfully protected.”
