The Bar Human Rights Committee welcomes the peace agreement signed today between the Government of Colombia and the Farc (Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia).
Kirsty Brimelow QC, who has been involved in mediation work between the Colombian government and the Peace Community of San José de Apartadó, said:
“For too long Colombia has been the byword for Latin America’s longest running conflict and its misery companion. The Bar Human Rights Committee has been working alongside human rights lawyers and defenders in Colombia for over two decades. In recent years it has been acting as a bridge in dialogue between San José de Apartadó comunidad de paz and the Colombian state. BHRC welcomes the peace agreement with its imperatives of peace and transitional justice. It continues to support those who have suffered and seek justice and supports a new context of stability and sustainable peace.”
