BHRC and EHRAC to co-host panel on rule of law in Georgia on 21 July (Doughty Street Chambers – Hybrid)

The international human rights community has expressed serious concern over challenges for the rule of law and the erosion of human rights law in Georgia, particularly surrounding the enjoyment of civil liberties, the suppression of dissent, and the independence of the judiciary. Judges, lawyers, human rights defenders and civil society more broadly have all been subject to attack. Through this panel event on 21 July 2025 at Doughty Street Chambers and online, featuring speakers with expertise on and direct experience of the situation in Georgia, the Bar Human Rights Committee of England and Wales (BHRC) and EHRAC aim to strengthen solidarity among legal professionals and civil society over the declining rule of law situation in Georgia. The panel will be chaired by Naomi Hart, Barrister at Essex Court Chambers & BHRC Executive Committee Member, and will welcome as speakers:

Tamar Oniani, Human Rights Programme Director, Georgian Young Lawyers’ Association

Toby Collis, Lawyer, European Human Rights Advocacy Centre

Camilla Alonzo, Lawyer, European Human Rights Advocacy Centre

Can Yeğinsu, Barrister, Three Verulam Buildings
