The Bar Human Rights Committee of England and Wales (“BHRC”) has released today, 3rd July 2014, a statement welcoming the Home Affairs Committee’s report on Female Genital Mutilation (FGM).
While the BHRC commends in particular the civil protection measures in the report, as recommended in BHRC’s own submission to the Committee, it urges the Government to consider the establishment of a dedicated FGM unit in the FCO. The organisation also stresses that greater parliamentary attention is not a substitute for public policy action and calls on the Government to swiftly implement the recommendations in the report, including improved education and engagement with those at risk, practising communities and front line professionals dealing with FGM.
